KML送交开放式地理空间协会(OGC)成为开放格式。
由Google和另一GIS公司Galdos Systems共同将KML送交给开放式地理空间协会(Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc)，目的将Google Earth软件使用的KML格式，开放作为GIS公开使用的开放格式之一。
而OGC组织，也在接受此格式之后，于4/14日将该格式公布为OpenGIS KML Encoding Standard (OGC KML)标准，其所采用的标准是根据Google所递交的KML 2.2版本格式，并且也将相容现有的KML2.2版档桉和相关工具，该标准定义了KML相关几何编写修改模式等等相关的应用程式相容资讯，以下是OGC组织发布的新闻截取

April 14, 2008 - The members of the Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) today announced the approval of the OpenGIS? KML Encoding Standard (OGC KML), marking KML's transition into an open standard which will be maintained by the OGC. Developers will now have a standard approach for using KML to code and share visual geographic content in existing or future web-based online maps and 3D geospatial browsers like Google EarthTM.
